Em44 dishin out the constructive critiques

Nobody's really posted any thoughts on the designs, neither critiques nor praises. So I thought maybe I'd go ahead and give some feedback. I hope no one minds, it seems to be a regular thing with previous contests, and I'm sure aspiring designers would be interested in knowing what to keep in mind for the next contests. Comments on a previous entry of mine gave direction for my entry here

7A06 and 7A12 - I like the original direction that you two took for the idea of a "uniform." However I think that they're a bit more over the top costumey. 7A06 is kinda cool, I like the detailing, and having it in two pieces makes it more versatile. The red is rather bright though(but hey, the british do like it like that...). I dig the top more than the skirt. It stops being british I suppose when the colour scheme is changed, but I'd like it if there were some subdued alternative schemes 'cause the styling would clearly keep it in the "uniform" theme.

7A04, 08, 32, 38, other school/sailor motifs - Lots of these are fairly appealing, I like that 04 is clearly a school uniform without going in the direction of a sailor uniform, or very old fashioned. Which stands out because I admit a lot of the school and sailor motif is done so much by brands already. While pleasant, some are just not different enough, like I may see some of the more proper school designs in Mary Magdalene's catalogue someday. Hey, being compared to Mary Magdalene isn't a bad thing either =) I guess it's a personal thing that I'm not looking for.

7A23 - Nurse uniform, not my thing, but I just have to say - nurse cape is pwnage. Watched some movie with a WWII nurse wearing one in black with red lining underneath - it was very eye catching and dramatic. Nice to see someone go there, though this time it's in white.

7A09 - I guess this is notable since it seems to be particularly popular. I admit, I'm not grasping what's compelling here, since I don't see how it fits the theme and, while beautiful art is not necessary for a clothing design, the art simply isn't communicating to me what this is really supposed to look like. There are parts which I am not sure are ruffles or lace. It's important to put some effort into clarifying details (even if it must be explained in text, like pointing to an element and explaining what it is if it's unclear visually), it would really aid the seamstresses/tailors in recreating your vision. Colour is a simple thing to add that could push the design forward, it doesn't take a lot of time or effort o_o

7A31 - this looks good, with a lot of attention paid to details. I don't think it's quite 'lolita' or something I could coordinate outside of a convention or photoshoot situation though. But aside from that, it's pretty well thought out, fits the theme, and is unique. I can't imagine wearing that whole outfit, but seeing as how those pieces are probably separates, each piece can be used differently, giving some versatility. If I picture it with the right materials and maybe colour a bit more muted or darker, the blue coat is a nice piece. The one detail I'm not so keen on is the back ruffle under the collar, looks slightly out of place. A good alt. colour scheme could be silver and blue.

7A33 - This is mine, and I look back and realize I need to sharpen up details, or add a few more notes, like about the buttons (I imagine them being metal), and the material... perhaps one more alternative subdued colour scheme, more monochromatic browns, instead of having pink sticking out like that. Though I do like chocolatexpink. Ahh, I wish I drew this with a fold over collar in mind, and added that possibility to the image... much improved versatility.

7A34 - whoa, a trippy aquatic take on the school uniform motif. Interesting print/pattern, but I wanna see the back It's hard to picture this IRL because the trippy pattern area is so ambiguous as to how exactly it attaches to everything else, it seems to be over the sailor collar, and looks like a flat panel floating there :O But it's neat, the more I look at it the more I go "hey that's cool and interesting." I'm curious about the back because the front part (with the "tails") seems like what I'd see in the back of most outfits.

There are some that seem to ignore the theme altogether....

Overall it seems most people aren't very excited about the uniform motif At least judging from the voting turnout compared to the pirate motif. Which is odd, there's so much uniform inspiration out there!

I did 7A06, and thanks for the feedback. The coat was bright red for precisely that reason- it was the old-school British vibe! The skirt was actually supposed to hearken back to the trousers typically worn with the red jackets; black with red stripes down the legs. I thought I listed some alternate color possibilities on the submission sheet. Guess I forgot. I was thinking dark blue, dark green, gray, and black would all be good alternatives, for this piece.

Yeah, I could definitely see the inspiration from those trousers they usually wear, I guess I'm thinking about how the top is highly detailed but the skirt is fairly straightforward. I'm used to seeing a lot more frills XD. It seems unusual to get such a plain and graphic skirt in this fashion. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, it's hard to say when trying to visualize the drawing into a real life image. Either way, I still think it's a good piece of work

The contrast was deliberate. I was going for a clean, streamlined sort of look, feeling that lots of frills on the skirt didn't fit with the motif I was going for. There was a bit of lace at the hem, though!

Simple- the problem is that your friend basically just rigged the contest in her favor. You don't see that this is fuzzy territory in regards to ethics? Besides, the design in question really doesn't fit the category. None of us can discern what sort of uniform she was trying to resemble. How is it fair for the winner of the "Lolita in Uniform" contest to not look like a uniform, when there are so many of us whose designs did?

Em08 Sugary coating

Telling friends to vote wouldn't be so bad if they weren't already bias to their friend's design. Not only that, but as its been stated...it doesn't look like it fits the category and looking at it from the standpoint of basic fashion standards...needs work.

Im interested in seeing how this is all handled. Even if all the votes are fair..that design won't make a good dress. Sorry to be blunt, im not one for sugar coating.

Em32 haterrrrssss

okay well when my friend gave in her design the person or someone entered it but they didnt put all her details and descriptions and stuff so it took away from her design and if she explained it to you i think you would get it and it would fit the criteria

she might reply to the next post

Um, well, bravo for bringing it up again and giving people more reason to find this skeevy because of the defensiveness? I don't know where you got the initial impression that people were hating on your friend, I mean, until you brought it up asking why. My critique post sure gave no personal attacks or accusations towards her, I was really curious about what someone like you may see in that design, and explained why I was puzzled.

I doubt that the fanplusfriend people purposefully meddled with her text or her design, 'cause no one else has mentioned that their images got messed with. If something was indeed cut, perhaps she didn't see the image size limits listed for the contest, which is unfortunate. But please understand that we as the voters have no inside scoop on what might have been excluded and shouldn't be expected to just *know* that there was a greater vision behind the image that was submitted.

I too am interested in seeing how this will be handled. My understanding is that fanplusfriend will simply not make a dress with a confusing design or outside their resources to do, but it will default to giving the cash credits prize to the winner. It looks like they haven't been making all the winning designs from previous contests, so they're either taking their sweet time or just defaulted to cash prize for those too.
